WHETHER there is something in the murky waters of the River Usk, the music scene in Newport keeps throwing up talented bands with the potential to be the next big thing.

For every Feeder, there have been countless others on the cusp of being huge who have imploded before they could make a big impression in the charts (see 60 Foot Dolls).

The Six Mile Riot are the latest in a long line of indie bands to emerge from Newport looking for recognition and where better to start than a headline gig at the legendary TJ's tomorrow night.

The five-piece band who cite Oasis, the Cooper Temple Cause, Unkle and Goldfrapp among their eclectic influences, will be joined on the bill tomorrow night by solo artist Kevin Dyer and Cardiff-based group Transposer.

Richard Scott, guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter with The Six Mile Riot said: "We are really looking forward to it. We've already played TJ's about four or five times and it is definitely the best place in Newport for live music."

The group are currently riding on the crest of a wave after progressing to the second round of auditions for the new band tent at this year's Glastonbury festival.

A second demo is now on the cards as well as a British tour.

In plotting their path to success, the band have been taking advice from TJ's owner John Siccolo.

"This year we are trying to give it the big push and we had a chat with John about the best plan of attack to get ourselves out there and get some exposure," said Richard.

"He told us the best places to play live around the country and he is a good person to have on your side.

"We are all prepared to make sacrifices and we know we have got to get out there and play these venues."
