JOHN Squire's relationship with Newport goes back to the recording of the Stone Roses' Second Coming LP in Rockfield Studios.

During the album's creation he hung out in TJ's with Ian Brown and took photographs of local artwork, one of which became the front-cover of Love Spreads.

Unfortunately, the Roses soon split after a diabolical performance at the Reading festival which Squire at least can claim absence from.

However, his solo career, unlike Brown's, has not flourished, with each band he forms and each record he produces failing to impress.

This week he released a new single, Room In Brooklyn, which marks some improvement (at least on the Seahorses).

It's like a nice but bland afternoon spent in an old-time bar with drinks and friends. Squire sounds a bit like George Harrison on vocals, and he manages a Beatlesque jangle in the background.

l He's also on tour playing Shepherd's Bush Empire on Friday, March 26.
