Tribute: Centre named after man who worked so hard for it A LASTING memorial was created for a Blaenau Gwent councillor who battled for a community centre in Cwmtillery.

The Wyndham Vowles Centre, in Crown Street, was officially opened by Councillor Vowles' widow Nell on Saturday afternoon.

Councillor Vowles, who represented the Cwmtillery ward until he died suddenly almost three years ago, was instrumental in securing a Lottery Community Fund grant of more than £421,000 for the centre.

Norman Price, chairman of the centre's trustees, told the Argus that it had been decided that the centre should be named after Councillor Vowles.

A Communities First grant of £8,000 has since helped to furnish the centre with tables, chairs and kitchen equipment.

Mr Price said the centre, on the former Crown School site, will be available for use by anyone in the Blaenau Gwent area.

Already an indoor bowling club, a slimming club and a cardiac rehabilitation clinic have been arranged.

Future plans could include youth clubs, counselling sessions and adult education, including computer courses for beginners.

"The first wedding reception has also already been booked," said Mr Price.

He added that the centre had been in the planning for more than ten years.

The opening was attended by Blaenau Gwent MP Llew Smith and local Assembly Member Peter Law.
