PLAYERS from Newport Rugby Club have given their full backing to the town's bid for city status.
The team's success is particularly important to the bid, which was launched at their home ground of Rodney Parade in September.
Promoting Newport as a sporting city, the bid's committee cites the rugby club's success in winning last season's Principality Cup - the first time Newport had won the trophy since 1977.
The Newport club has produced greats such as Ken Jones, Bryn Meredith and David Watkins, as well as current Wales international Ian Gough.
