Eighteen year old Chris Kenward knows that there is no magic formula for getting an unusual career off the ground. But by working with Careers Wales Gwent, he is now getting closer to achieving his dream.
Inspired by top American street magician, David Blaine, Chris from Rogerstone knew that he wanted to learn the art of close up street magic and potentially turn a hobby into a career.
Showing remarkable commitment, Chris searched the Internet for a magician to teach him the trade but he realised that he still needed careers advice and support if he were to succeed as a magician.
Chris said, "I literally just walked into the Careers Centre and asked them to help me become a professional magician. I think they were a bit surprised by such an unusual request but that didn't stop them from being really helpful and supportive.
"My tutor is based in America and I learn by email and via videos. I am getting along well but I really needed advice on how to get started."
"My careers adviser has helped me to write letters off to London agents as well as looking at other avenues such as Cruise Ships where I can apply for work."
Chris's Youth Gateway adviser, Sarah Jane Bailey, said, "He's a really determined young man and has already proved his resourcefulness in finding a tutor. As his adviser, I have been there in a supportive role helping him to work out how to use his magical skills to carve out a career."
Youth Gateway is supported by the European Social Fund.
