LLANELLI Scarlets full back Barry Davies, who scored THAT try against Northampton on Sunday, has been left out of Wales' Six Nations squad because he is not ready - yet, says coach Steve Hansen.

The omission of Davies was the biggest surprise in the 31-strong squad announced yesterday, but Hansen defended his decision.

"It's not because he hasn't played enough, but the players picked are playing better, one or two have got more versatility and there are things he needs to work on which is between me and him," said Hansen.

But he has faith in Davies ability. "I'm sure his time will come and that he will play for Wales in the near future," said Hansen.

"It was very brave and skilful to do what he did, it could have been a try for Northampton, it was a try out of this world.

"But it's important we don't get carried away with the hysteria of him scoring such a try.

"I'm not surprised at the reaction, people look at the glamorous things first, but how many people would have said he should have been in if he had not scored the try?"

Hansen also gave a vote of confidence to Colin Charvis retaining the Wales captaincy, though he is now playing French Second Division rugby for Tarbes.

Hansen has had Charvis watched several times, and is happy with his form and fitness.

"I've had him watched three times which is probably more than other players who are playing locally," he said.

"We're happy with the test results over the last two Mondays he's been here. There's no doubt he's a world class player when he's fit and in the right mind."

Hansen is sure Wales can carry on where they left off in the World Cup and is pleased with Welsh teams' performances in the Heineken Cup with 14 victories, just two fewer than their previous best.

"There has been an air of expectancy coming back from the World Cup, we've had a really good Heineken Cup and there's been a big improvement across the board in the toughest competition there's been," he said.
