PROLIFIC striker Chris Summers has revealed only a heart-to-heart with his wife, Emma, and Cwmbran Town boss Brian Coyne prevented him from quitting football earlier this season.
The much-travelled marksman recently broke a club record by scoring in six successive league games, but was deprived of a chance to extend the mark on Saturday when the home Welsh Premier game against Porthmadog was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
"To be honest, there was a time earlier this season when I wasn't enjoying my football and was on the verge of jacking it all in," said Summers.
"The club had brought in a lot of new players and suddenly we weren't creating any chances. I was down in the dumps and couldn't raise much enthusiasm.
"But I had a chat with my wife, Emma, and then with Brian Coyne, and soon I regained my love for the game.
"And funnily enough, it was after I got sent off in a match at Haverfordwest County that I really began to enjoy playing again."
Before he started his record-breaking scoring run, Summers had, by his standards, gone through a lean spell in front of goal.
However, the form which has terrorised many a defence in spells with Cardiff City, Hereford United, Merthyr Tydfil, Barry Town, Inter Cardiff, Ton Pentre, Carmarthen Town,
Haverfordwest County and four stints with Cwmbran, returned, and his eight goals in those six matches have taken his total for the Crows to an amazing 91 in 146 outings.
"I didn't realise I created a record because as long as the team is doing well it's all I'm concerned about," continued Summers, a fire-fighter based in Caerphilly.
"We've picked up a bit after a poor start in terms of the amount of points we had won early on, and we're playing some excellent football.
"We must never take anything for granted, and there's no doubt our form must be maintained if we are to be successful this season."
