THE Kings Arms on Belmont Hill, Caerleon, is a quaint archetypal British pub full of olde worlde charm and the service was equally pleasant.
The fare was typical 'pub grub' offering no surprises, but it was plentiful and freshly made.
My companion started with succulent prawns on a bed of crisp salad, dressed in Marie Rose sauce (£2.95) and I had breaded and deep-fried garlic mushrooms, served with garlic mayonnaise dip and a side salad (£2.75). Both were enjoyable.
For the main course I had slices of beef sirloin steak with mushrooms, onions and peppers in a 'secret' sauce, which was distinctively peppery, served on an attention-grabbing sizzling hot platter (£8.95).
My companion enjoyed an 8oz gammon steak, chargrilled and served with a fried egg and a slice of pineapple. Both meals came with a choice of potatoes and vegetables (£5.95). Again, the portions were large and they were served nice and hot.
With determination and a dedication to duty we attempted dessert. I went for walnut gateau and my companion had ice cream with strawberry sauce.
With a bottle of Hardy's Stamp Shiraz Cabernet (£10.50), and two soft drinks, the bill came to £38.40.
The service was efficient, friendly but avoided being overbearing. Jacqui Pulford
