CHRIS Summers' goal double earned the popular striker the Cwmbran record for being the first player to score in six successive Welsh Premier league games.

Not even former top goal-scoring Crows such as Mattie Davies, Simon Dyer and Andrew Mainwaring managed that feat, and Summers took his total in 139 full and eight substitute appearances to an amazing 91.

The stat attack will see Summers grabbing the headlines. But there it should end, because the man of the match was - well, Cwmbran Town.

To pick out the much-travelled marksman would be unfair to Cwmbran's back four, who blotted out dangerous strike duo Peter Smith and Danny Barton enough to allow the latter only a late and irrelevant consolation.

It would be unfair to Cwmbran's tireless midfield quartet, who also displayed no small skill against the hosts' home four, including former Crow Steve Futcher.

And it would also be unfair to stand-in striker Kristian Diamond, whose new role revealed an extra string to his bow.

On-loan Newport County goalkeeper Gareth Wesson was largely a witness to what went on,especially when Newtown's Richard Harris struck his cross bar with a free kick and when Barton scored with a header at a corner.

No result will ever make up for the 2-1 home defeat by Bangor City, when manager Brian Coyne's men should have walked away comfortable winners by at least a four-goal margin.

But the satisfaction gained from this game is threefold. Firstly, it came against a supposedly better team, secondly, the fine all-round performance, and thirdly, it gave Coyne a win on his first visit to Latham Park since quitting the Mid Wales outfit after 11 years in charge last season.

Cwmbran played some outstanding football, which often saw Newtown chasing shadows.

The referee of this particular contest ended Newtown's Nick Evans' involvement ten minutes after the interval, when he showed the right back a straight red for what appeared to be a torrent of abuse towards the official.

Cwmbran didn't miss any glaring chances. However, they did get the ball in Newtown's penalty box often enough to have secured a larger victory.

Coyne handed Adam James his away debut, but the left-back lasted just 40 minutes before an injury meant he was replaced by his brother, Kristian.

Summers' double, one a penalty, secured a 2-0 advantage at the break, and when Hurlin fired in the third off a post, it summed proceedings and the scoreline flattered Newtown.
