FORMER colleagues of a Tredegar woman, who was killed by her adopted son, have raised money for a poignant tribute to her memory.
Afryl Burr was stabbed to death by 30-year-old Darren Burr just after Christmas 2001. Burr was detained indefinitely for her manslaughter under the Mental Health Act by a judge at Cardiff crown court in 2002.
Mrs Burr, who was 58 and had three other adopted children, had worked as a cleaner at Tredegar General Hospital for 15 years.
And after her death her colleagues and other friends collected more than £500 for a memorial to be placed in the hospital.
Local artist Gerald Owens was commissioned to paint a picture of Tredegar's Bedwellty Park, a place where Mrs Burr loved to play with her grandchildren.
The painting now hangs at one of the entrances to the hospital and it is hoped another tribute will be placed in the accident and emergency department.
Betty Bethel, who was Mrs Burr's supervisor for 15 years and who has recently retired, said her colleague had been a very kind and reliable person.
"She was very much admired, she was always willing to help other people," said Mrs Bethel.
"Her death affected me terribly. She really doted on her grandchildren - it was such a sad affair."
Another colleague, Avril Phillips, who worked with Mrs Burr for many years, added everybody had been very shocked at her death. "She is very sadly missed by us all," she said. "We think about her all the time."
