DRAGONS coach Mike Ruddock praised the efforts of his side against Stade Francais yesterday, but also gave the French champions credit.

"They played very well and they took their opportunities," admitted Ruddock. "We were disappointed, and this was a learning curve for us.

"Our discipline let us down, though they played with a higher tempo. You need all our cavalry out there when they are playing like that.

"They turned it round and showed a bit of pride. We knew we had to be physical and take it to them, but they matched us, and all credit to them.

"We played well to start with, but then we didn't touch the ball for 20 or 30 minutes. "They had the wind with them, and we were 27 points down at half-time. I said, 'let's restore credibility in the second half,' but we never got going.

"We've got no complaints about the ref because we were warned he was hot with the cards.

"Our preparation was spot on, but you've got to give credit to Stade Francais. They turned up the heat and broke us, playing the rugby they are renowned for."

Ruddock was full of praise for the efforts of Percy Montgomery.

"Percy was magnificent, he showed huge commitment, and his kicking game was awesome," he said. "He never shirked a tackle or ducked any responsibility, he typified the spirit we're going to need.

"The support we had today was also great, it's building, and everyone can see there's a future here. We're not going to be too downhearted."

Ruddock stressed that having passed up the opportunity to be the next Wales' coach because of his commitment to the Dragons, he will give Gareth Jenkins every assistance should the Llanelli chief succeed Steve Hansen.

"If Gareth gets the job and he needs any help, I'd be happy to give it," he said.
