A TEENAGER who stabbed a man twice during a brawl wept when the jury found him guilty at Newport crown court.

The 17-year-old, from Newport, who cannot be named, had denied the charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He attacked David Hopkins, 31, on Sunday, September 21, last year. The victim, of Somerton Park, Newport, needed life-saving surgery at the Royal Gwent Hospital to repair a punctured lung.

Recorder Mark Evans told the defendant he would not be released on bail while he waits to be sentenced on February 13.

Mr Evans said: "I would be doing you no favours by allowing you to walk free during this time."

The jury reached a majority verdict of ten to two.

The youth broke down in court and sobbed loudly.

Earlier, while giving evidence, Mr Hopkins told the court how the incident happened.

The teenager had been baiting Mr Hopkins after he had rowed with his partner, Alison Northey, 35.

Mr Hopkins admitted to losing his temper and confronted the youth. The defendant then dragged Mr Hopkins into his house and beat him.

Mr Hopkins said: "He dragged me to the kitchen, where he punched me and we started to struggle.

"I was desperate to get out, and as I turned towards the door to escape I felt him stab me in the back of the shoulder.

"Just before I got to the door I felt it happen again, this time at the side of my body."

Mr Hopkins said the teenager then chased him out into the street with a knife in his hand, screaming: "I'm going to kill you." David Hopkins says the physical wounds inflicted when he was stabbed by a teenager are healing, but the "nightmare" still affects him. Mr Hopkins, 31, who lives in Somerton Park, Newport, with his partner, Alison Northey, said: "I've not been able to get myself together since the stabbing in September. "Neither myself nor Alison can go out and feel safe anymore, we just don't leave the house unless we must. If you look in our fridge and cupboards right now you'll see we have nothing in, we can't even go to the shop. "I've not been able to communicate properly, not even to Alison. One minute I'm laughing and joking, the next I'm crying and I don't know why." A painter and decorator, Mr Hopkins, who has been on sick leave since his release from the Royal Gwent Hospital, said he has trouble sleeping.
