VANDALS are being blamed for a fire in a prefabs due for demolition at Ridgeway, Newport.

The incident happened just before 6.30pm, on Sunday, at Ridgeway Park Road, and the house was well alight when the fire service arrived.

Four firefighters wearing brea-thing apparatus and using two hose reels and a hose reel jet managed to extinguish the blaze.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire Service said the fire was being treated as arson.

Phil Toms, director of Newport Housing Trust, which is overseeing the replacement of the prefabs with new bungalows, said: "We've had some problems with vandalism on the estates and a couple of mobile homes set on fire. This happened again Sunday night when one of the prefabs was broken into and set on fire.

"It was an empty property although an elderly lady in a neighbouring prefab had her electricity cut off and we attended there."

The trust has a demolition contract to clear all the empty properties by February or March, but that is being held up as the water, gas and electricity have not been disconnected.
