A GENEROUS disabled schoolboy from Newport used his pocket money to raise funds to help others.
Rhys Harries, aged eight, (pictured) collected £36 for the Sparkle Appeal by organising a raffle for his family.
The Gaer Junior School pupil bought tasty prizes, like crisps, biscuits and chocolates from his savings, and held the big event on Boxing Day.
Proud mum Michelle, 32, said the fundraiser was Rhys' idea.
"He did it out of his own pocket money and it was his own idea," she said.
"He does it every year. Last year he did it for Eveswell Children's Centre, and this time he chose Sparkle."
The centre has a special meaning for Rhys.
He received physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to treat his club-foot at Eveswell.
The new children's centre will help children across Newport, Torfaen and south Monmouthshire.
Michelle said: "We know the importance of these places. I think it is excellent. It is something this area of Wales desperately, desperately needs.
"I am extremely proud of Rhys and what he has done."
Tina White, project development manager, said Rhys' fundraiser was "heartwarming".
"If we have got that kind of support from Rhys, anyone can do it," she said. "A big thank-you to him and all he has done."
