Glamorgan paceman Simon Jones was finally due to find out today if he is going to the West Indies with the England touring party.

Selection was delayed from yesterday for crucial fitness tests to be carried out on the fast bowling contingent.

Jones, sidelined for 14 months after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury during the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, was expected to earn his recall after undergoing a gruelling fitness regime with the Academy at Loug-hborough.

Jones has declared himself fit and former England and Glamorgan physiotherapist Dean Conway has said all he needs now is match practice.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney was due to reveal the 16-man party yesterday lunchtime and put an end to the speculation which has grown since England beat a retreat from Sri Lanka shortly before Christmas.

But instead the selectors announced they would be delaying their announcement for a further 24 hours to make further checks on the fitness of several players whose selection may be regarded as a gamble.

Durham's Steve Harmison missed the recent tour to Sri Lanka with a side strain and James Anderson (Lancashire) withdrew from the tour to Bangladesh and struggled with an ankle injury in Sri Lanka.

With that in mind, and the recent memories of last winter's Ashes tour, when both Andrew Flintoff and Darren Gough flew home after failing to recover from injuries, the selectors were persuaded to wait a further 24 hours.
