A DRIVER was killed and a mother, baby and child suffered serious injuries in a crash in Cwmbran.

Thirty-year-old Wiremu Pakau died when his Volkswagen Golf was in collision with a Fiat Multipla on Cwmbran Drive at around 6.30pm on Saturday.

An 18-month baby, a five-year-old and their mother, who was driving the Fiat, are in the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, with serious leg injuries. The family had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters.

Mr Pakau was from the Cwmbran area. The family in the Fiat are from Pontypool.

Investigating officer Inspector Steve Corcoran said: "All three who were in the Fiat are still in hospital receiving treatment for broken bones.

"They are very, very lucky as it could have been a lot worse. None of the injuries are thought to be life threatening at this stage.

"We are looking for any information in regard to either vehicle and the incident itself.

"In particular, we are interested in hearing about any sightings of the Volkswagen that was travelling from the Pontypool."
