PUPILS at a Newport school proved their love of the written word yesterday - by attempting to make Gwent's longest bookworm.

Headed and tailed by the friendly worm leading the BBC's Big Read campaign, the worm had a midsection 116.5ft long made entirely of books.

Maindee Primary's English co-ordinator Nicola Edwards, who also runs the school's library club, said: "The pupils lined up books to make the bookworm, and the school with the longest one wins a prize. Ours went right through the school from the entrance hall and the children had a really fun day.

"There were big books and little tiny ones in there, mostly a huge range of children's books, and we're selling them on this Thursday to the children after school.

"The proceeds will go towards restocking the school library." Maindee is one of seven schools taking part in the 'bookworm' event organised by Newport Libraries.
