FAMILY and friends of Newport cancer victim Susan Edwards raised £6,000 to buy a new electric bed for Cardiff's Velindre Hospital.

Mrs Edwards, from Lliswerry, died from bone cancer in April, aged just 31. Her friends and relatives held a fun day at Lliswerry Leisure Centre to raise money for the hospital and used the proceeds to buy the bed.

Magor-based Interbrew raised a further £2,000 and this will help towards revamping the hospital's high dependency unit.

The hospital's appeals officer, Karen Jenkins, said there would be a plaque on the bed to say the money had been raised for Susan Edwards. She said: "Susan didn't live for very long after she was diagnosed and her family want to make people aware of the need to check themselves and to not be frightened to go to the doctor if they think something is wrong so that it can be sorted out."
