THEY know how to spell success at one Newport school - for young fundraisers raised thousands of pounds for a children's charity, thanks to a sponsored spell.

Durham Road Junior School raised £2,850 - one of the largest amounts ever raised in a South Wales school - for the NSPCC.

Head teacher Jeff Beecher said: "The amount raised is amazing. We promised the NSPCC we would do something for them so the children did a sponsored spelling test.

"We have 360 pupils at the school and everyone took part and the majority of them raised some money.

"They all had a great time doing it."

Mr Beecher said that although the children did regular spelling tests this was something different and the children had incentives such as stickers and badges from the NSPCC on the money they raised.

He said: "It was a fantastic amount and we were really pleased with it."

Lorraine Jones, NSPCC schools organiser, said that they were delighted.

"Staff at the school were excellent and really encouraged the children to become involved in the event," she said

"The figure raised is a credit to the children's desire to help others and the generosity of the community as a whole," she added.
