THE Canadian rugby squad has been hit by major problems and could be without as many as five key forwards against Wales in their opening World Cup clash in Melbourne on October 12.
Lock Mike James (back), flanker Al Charron (knee) and number eight Ryan Banks (knee) are all injured and doubtful for the World Cup.
In addition, fellow forwards John Tait and Dan Baugh are ruled out by contractual and insurance problems respectively.
"They are five of our key players and we'll struggle without them," admitted prop Rod Snow, back in Wales for a few days before heading off to Canada's pre-World Cup training camp.
"The forwards are our strength, so if there is any good news for Wales that's it," added Snow.
Canada have had their problems, like Wales, and they lost an unprecedented two games against rivals USA this summer.
One was in an Argentinian tournament which was the only rugby Snow played during the off season as he took a rare seven-week break.
He is fit and raring to go, taking some comfort from Canada's problems. "One positive is that we haven't put out our best team yet," he said.
"It's been mix and match whereas Wales have been together all summer. Now we've got a month together in Victoria when we'll accomplish a lot.
"It's going to be a tough group and Wales ought to be the second best team outside New Zealand, but a lot will question whether they are and whether we can knock them off.
"If we have any ambitions to get to the quarter-finals it's a game we have to win. They have got all the resources whereas we struggle to get a set of jerseys.
"But it's a game we have to win, and it's a game we think we can win."
Snow is delighted the Newport name has been retained in the regional title after all after spending nine years with the club.
He was in Argentina when he heard the news. "I had a phone call, then checked the internet, it was super news," said Snow.
"It made no sense not to have Newport in the name when they are the biggest and best supported club.
"It seems common sense has prevailed ultimately. It made my day and I'll be looking forward to it now."
