PLANS to revolutionise the Newport shopping experience are taking a step forward as bidding for a huge new mall starts.
Developers looking to revamp and expand the Kingsway shopping centre have made offers to owners Rhys (Newport) who want £25m for the site.
Rhys (Newport) have planning permission to double the size of the 30-year-old centre and neighbouring John Frost Square to create an ultra modern £110m shopping mall 'anchored' by a huge Debenhams.
They announced their sale of the plans in early July and have now received several bids from retail developers.
Graham Moore, chief executive of Newport Unlimited, which is working on regenerating Newport, said: "This is very positive and is the next step in the development process.
"The Kingsway centre is a 1960s' development and is somewhat tired.
"This scheme will revolutionise shopping in Newport and is a huge prize for the city.
"We are intent on the development of the city centre and securing Debenhams. We will be meeting up with Rhys Newport and hope to discuss the most suitable bidder.
"We will then work with that purchaser to help bring the plan to completion."
The identity of the bidders has not been disclosed, but Mr Moore added: "We've met quite a few prospective purchasers and have explained the activities and vision of Newport Unlimited. The feedback we got was very positive."
The plans aim to double the size of the Kingsway centre to 450,000sqft, and to build a hotel, apartments, and 1,370 space car park.
The Welsh Development Agency and Newport council have both pledged to help the scheme with some financial backing.
Next Wednesday Newport Unlimited is presenting ideas for a masterplan to redevelop the city.
A city centre university campus, regeneration of industrial areas at Llanwern and Pirelli Cables, road developments and transport improvements will also be covered by the plan.
Mr Moore said he hopes to have the draft plan available by the end of September. It will then be submitted to the council.
Public consultation on the masterplan takes place on September 10, from 4pm-7pm at Newport City Live Arena, Clarence Place.
