'I will be doing everything I can to help them,' says Jeff Cuthbert Caerphilly RFC can be the best CAERPHILLY AM Jeff Cuthbert has backed the town's Premier League rugby team to triumph in the face of adversity. The Cheesemen were left out of the new regional rugby set up but Cuthbert says that the club can still go from strength to strength in the future. Cuthbert, who even interrupted his daughter's wedding party to attend a kit launch at Virginia Park last Thursday, said: "Caerphilly RFC can still be one of the best teams in Wales especially if the people of Caerphilly get behind them. The club still has a good future despite missing out on the regional set-up. "I will be doing everything I can, through the Assembly, to help them. We need to get as many businesses involved and funding for the club as possible and this way the club can take-off again." At the open evening last week Caerphilly launched their new kit for the 2003/4 season. It is the third season of Valley Lines' sponsorship and on Friday they will unveil an historic tribute to the club. A special train will be named Caerphilly RFC to mark the company's continued support of the club. Another idea to make the club more appealing is the prospect of Caerphilly running out to the sounds of pop group Dragonheart. The teen sensations are trying to integrate the name Caerphilly into a new song to pump up the atmosphere at Virginia Park on a matchday. A new marketing team has been set-up at the club in an effort to get more businesses involved with Caerphilly RFC. Chairman Phil Williams, however, says that the club's continued investment in youth, holds the key for the future. "Ten years ago we gained entry to the national leagues - then from division four to the premier league and into a European final," he said. "What got us this far was our great youth set-up and we now have 300 youngsters, which gives hope for the future."
