ELEVEN-times capped wing Shane Williams is not going to the World Cup for the ride. After his shock inclusion in Wales' World Cup squad yesterday, the Neath/Swansea Ospreys ace said he had a point to prove.
He was only recently recalled to the Wales side, scoring two tries against Romania, and afterwards said he did not expect to be on the plane to Australia.
But now he has made it, he says: "I'm not going for a holiday. I want to be involved in every game.
"It was a massive shock to be included by (Wales coach) Steve Hansen.
"Right up until yesterday morning I did not expect to go, so when I got the phone call it was amazing.
"Now I've got to prove a point. Steve didn't exactly say that, but that's what I sensed.
"I hadn't been involved for some time before Romania and I want to prove that I should be involved.
"When I was chosen against Romania my intention was to give it everything.
"I was really excited and wanted to go on the field and not disappoint anyone.
"It took me a while to get into the game but I came off the field feeling OK though I still did not think I'd be going to the World Cup, but here I am.
"Personally I now feel I'm a better and more experienced player and if I do get a chance to play in the World Cup I want to come off the field knowing that I've done my best."
Williams' selection owes much to the fact he can double up as a scrum half if necessary, and the 26-year-old is happy to do that.
"Throughout pre-season I've been training as a scrum half and a wing and it has gone well," he said.
"I'm thoroughly enjoying the fact that I can play in both positions.
"I joined Neath as a scrum half before being converted to a wing and I think the positions aid each other.
"Scrum half helps quick thinking and wing helps quickness off the mark so I've found it easy to play both positions."
And of Wales' World Cup chances, he said: "I don't see why we can't make the quarter-finals.
"Every game you play in the World Cup is tough and you can't write off anyone.
"But having won the last two games hopefully we are on the up and hopefully we can improve again."
