BRITAIN suffered a triple disappointment in the Stade de France last night, missing out on medals in three World Championship finals.
Marshfield-based Darren Campbell came closest to adding to his 100 metres bronze as he was edged into fourth place in the final of the 200m.
Commonwealth 400m hurdles champion Chris Rawlinson failed to recapture his best form as he struggled against a strong field and finished sixth.
There was agony too for young Chris Tomlinson, who narrowly missed out on the jump-off for the medals in the long jump final.
Campbell had been hoping to become the first British male athlete to win two individual medals in a World Championship and overcame the tough draw of the inside lane two to run a powerful race and clock 20.39 seconds.
However, with John Capel and Darvis Patton making it an American one-two, Campbell was beaten by one hundredth of a second by Japan's Shingo Suetsugu.
Campbell felt history finally caught up with him, but promised he would bounce back.
"It's a shame that I didn't win a medal but I've won so many of those close finishes I suppose I was always going to lose one," he said. "It's just unfortunate it happened tonight.
"The guys who beat me tonight didn't run the 100 metres and they were fresher than me, so to get so close to them shows the strength I've got."
