James Lee (Cardiff) extricated himself from a series of mishaps to finish as the leading Welshman in the Wood BMW Classic West Region order of merit tournament at Dudsbury.

He shared seventh place after clawing himself back into contention after a fine four under par 67 in the second round. But birdies were scarce on the final day and a level par 71 left him six shots adrift.

Darren Griffiths (Glyn Abbey) led the tournament for the first time in his career after a first round 68 when the windy conditions made scoring difficult. But he faltered with 75 on the second day and a 71 in the final round for a total of 214 left him tied 11th.

The former European Tour player Andy Beal (Salisbury & South Wilts) returned to the winner's rostrum for the first time since having his left eye removed because of a life threatening disease 19 months ago.
