MORE than 1,000 people climbed to the top of Newport's historic Transporter Bridge for the city landmark's annual open day yesterday. Visitors old and young climbed the 277 steps to the top of the 177 feet tall structure for unparalleled views across South Wales.

Bridge superintendent John McDermott said: "The views up there are spectacular. You can see right over to Bristol on a clear day, and pick out landmarks such as the Severn Bridge, Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, and the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm.

"I've been up there hundreds of times and you never get tired of the view. The climb can be quite tiring, and a lot of people didn't make it, but they all agreed it was well worth it. I've certainly never heard any complaints about it."

Visitors were treated to a demonstration of how the bridge works with a guided tour of the motor house. Money raised from the day will go towards upkeep.
