WHAT was three metres long by three metres wide, had six tiers and took up half a Newport shop?

The answer was the largest wedding cake that cake makers Gemelli's have ever made.

Staff at Gemelli's Patisserie, in Bridge Street, put the finishing touches to the wedding cake designed for 1,200 people on Saturday afternoon.

Italian-born Sergio Cinotti, owner of Gemelli's, said that the six-tier wedding cake was the biggest he had ever made in this country.

He said: "I have done some research and I believe that this was one of the biggest wedding cakes ever made.

"This cake was three metres wide by three metres long, with six tiers, and it took up half of the shop.

"It took five days to make the cake, with 14 chefs working on it."

Mr Cinotti said the cake was destined for a wedding yesterday at Cardiff International Arena - and is probably now in pieces, wrapped in paper napkins, in hundreds of homes.
