AS ANYONE who's ever had the builders in will know, it can be an entertaining experience. Endless cups of tea and conversations about the public figures of the day, the deficiencies of almost all other builders and the occasional bit of work can provide better entertainment than the TV.

That's obviously what Chepstow electrician Ian Luther thought, anyway, which is why he's come up with a unique show about life on a building site.

Returning to Gwent after being described as "a breath of fresh air for British musical theatre" at the Edinburgh Festival - though with a song called Builder's Bum the air might not necessarily have been that fresh - Ian's musical, Cheek, is at Cwmbran's Congress Theatre tomorrow night.

The musical about building site life also features the songs Cowboy Builders, Jesus Was A Carpenter and The Builders From Hell, with all percussion created with real workmen's tools.

Ian said: "We were asked to do the Fringe opening party, we did the parade, and now we're beginning a 45-date UK tour so things are really starting.

"I come from a building background and about four years ago a friend asked me, 'Why don't you form a builder's band?'

"I thought it was a silly idea but I recorded a song called The Wolf Whistle and Builder's Bum and we were picked up by the tabloids and had some performances on TV.

"Then we had the idea of turning the thing into a show and I hooked up with an old friend and we developed the concept over the last three years. "We had to advertise for professional actors with a building background and we got about 100 applicants. We've an award-winning tenor in the show, a world champion bagpipe player, and we have a club singer and carpenter from Newport.

"We've got the real McCoy which makes it a bit grittier - you can always tell someone who knows how to use a hammer."

Cheek comes to the Congress Theatre, Cwmbran, tomorrow night. Tickets are £10 or £9 concessions and the show begins at 7.30pm. Box office 01633 868239.
