THOUSANDS of people lined the High Street in Blackwood to enjoy the sights and sounds of the town's fourth annual carnival.
And the verdict from Saturday's crowds was that the 2003 carnival was the biggest and best yet.
A cavalcade of high-powered motorbikes and trikes unofficially kicked off the celebrations when they roared through the town centre to join the procession's starting point at the northern end of Blackwood.
The bikers had gathered from all over Britain and Europe to commemorate the death of their friend, Stanley Bond, formerly of Cwmfelinfach, but more recently of London.
In glorious sunshine, floats and marching bands slowly made their way through the town to the parade's finishing point; the Civic Centre in Pontllanfraith.
A host of funfair rides, stalls, live music and dancing exhibitions kept everyone entertained at the Civic Centre following the parade.
All money raised by the Blackwood town council-organised event will go to the mayor's appeal
Fifteen-year-old carnival queen Kayliegh Williams, of Pontllanfraith, said afterwards: "I was very nervous at first but I really enjoyed it - it was very exciting."
The prize for the best float went to the Pontllanfraith Health Centre for their take on Aladdin.
Gus Jones Jewellers triumphed in the best shop window category.
