THE Queens of the Stone Age's new single takes the band to a whole new commercial level.

When the band played Newport Centre after their last but one album, Rated R, was released, there was a poor turnout.

Shame, as those who didn't show missed what might now be seen as the band's heavier than thou heyday.

First It Giveth, the new single out on Interscope on Monday, August 18, is slicker and less heady than previous work.

The band have also written 25 other songs to make the album to follow their last which was Songs for the Death.

But they won't be playing any of them on their forthcoming festival appearances for fear of becoming bored of them.

l Catch the Queens at V2003 on Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17, Glasgow Big Day Out On The Green on Saturday, August 23. Recording of the new album starts in January.
