GWENT Dragons are stepping up their search for a back row forward to fill the void left by Andrew Powell, who has joined French club Beziers.

They are talking to an international player based in England, with medical reports holding the key after injury problems which are now believed to be over.

Gwent coach Mike Ruddock says he is keen to get another quality player in for the back row after Powell's decision to quit.

He also remains confident of signing up a quality outside centre.

South Africa's Robbie Fleck remains an option, especially after he failed to make the squad for the Tri Nations competition, lessening his chances of making the World Cup squad.

Fleck has been capped 31 times by the Springboks and could well link up again with Andy Marinos after the pair played for Western Stormers together a few years ago.

But much will depend on the launch of the Gwent Dragons on July 28 and the public response.

Talks are continuing about the Rodney Parade venue, but Gwent and Newport are still some way apart on the rental for use of the ground though Gwent are confident it will be resolved.

Gwent's first game against Llanelli Scarlets at Stradey Park will be on Saturday evening September 6, kick off at 5.30pm.

Their first home game the week after is on the Friday night at 7.05pm while the Celtic Cup game, also at Llanelli, is on Saturday September 20 at 5.30pm.
