SPECSAVERS staff ran the race of their life last night. The nine women from the Newport opticians ran, walked and staggered around Cardiff's Bute Park, as they made a spectacle of themselves competing in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life.

Irene Magahy, 35, of Abbots Mews, Newport, led the team. She trained for the event by going to the gym a couple of times a week, walking to work every day, and going jogging.

She said: "I'd never really done anything like this before, but I was attracted by who we are sponsoring.

"And I'm a lot fitter than I used to be, so this seemed a chance to see how much I've achieved."

The Specsavers team hope to raise over £200 for breast cancer research. Ms Magahy said: "With us all being women, I think it's important we continue to raise awareness of breast cancer and support research."
