TEN years of rescuing abandoned or ill-treated greyhounds was marked in Tredegar at the weekend.

Greyhound Rescue Wales was set up a decade ago to find new homes for greyhounds and lurchers - which are often dumped, and sometimes shot, once they are no longer able to race.

The organisation's anniversary was celebrated at Bryn Bach Park, in Tredegar, with a cake in the shape of a dog - and some of the greyhounds currently needing new homes were also brought along.

Shaun Madden, regional co-ordinator, said one, called Magic, is a black dog of around five years of age. He is said to be a very friendly and lively dog that needs someone to work with him patiently.

And Bluey - a white greyhound with blue patches - was about to be shot recently when he was saved and taken to Greyhound Rescue Wales. He is said to love other dogs and has only been with the organisation for a short time.

Greyhound Rescue is run by volunteers who use their own homes and other kennels, including those in Tredegar, Porthcawl and Ammanford, to house the greyhounds while new homes are found for them.

Anyone who is interested in either dog should contact Mr Madden on 01495 313413.
