NEWPORT'S popular Waterfront Festival was launched again on Saturday, and the weather meant it was plain sailing for all those taking part.

Many local groups and organisations - most with a watery connection - were involved in the festival.

It was held by the River Usk, not far from the city centre, and displays took place in the water and on dry land as small boats sailed past.

Among those taking part were SARA, the voluntary river rescue organisation, Newport Uskmouth Sailing Club, Newport Sea Cadets and volunteers from the Friends of the Newport Ship.

The festival took place near the site of the new theatre and arts centre, where the now-famous medieval ship was found.

Also bringing the past alive were a group of people who stepped back in time to educate and entertain visitors - the Marcher Stuarts, a 17th-century history and battle re-enactment group.
