IT'S a clash of the titans that will turn the sports world on its head. For two world champions from Gwent are gearing up for an epic showdown which will see boxer Joe Calzaghe take on snooker ace Mark Williams (pictured).

But they won't need to trade punches - for the pair will be battling out on the green baize. WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe wants to go head to head with Mark Williams, one of his closest friends.

And he wants to take on the world snooker champion from Cwm at the snooker table. They will battle it out over twelve frames instead of rounds to prove who is the undisputed king of the table rather than the ring.

Joe said: "Mark's a great mate of mine but friendship goes out of the window when two sportsmen lay their titles on the line and it becomes a matter of pride. I'm going into Mark's backyard to challenge for his crown and it will be a no-holds barred, vicious and brutal battle over twelve frames."

Mark is a huge boxing fan and is due to be at ringside for his friend's next match. He said: "Joe and I have been friends for some time. I'm quite looking forward to taking him on at snooker because there's very little chance of me taking him on at boxing.

"I've heard that Joe has been practising for our match so he must be taking it seriously." No date or venue has yet been set for the showdown. Both sportsmen are keen to rise to the challenge, which Joe wants to take place after he defends his WBO super-middleweight belt against Byron Mitchell at the CIA on June 28.

"Mark will be hoping that I come through against Mitchell to line up our showdown," said Joe. He doesn't have to worry about me. I will retain my title in style and will then look forward to our confrontation."
