A VALLEYS mother-of-three was left fighting for her life after a collision outside her home.
Sarah Baker, 30, from Beili Glas Road, Fleur-de-Lys, was taken to the intensive care unit of Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital with a fractured skull after the Tuesday night accident. She was in a critical condition but this morning had improved enough to be moved to a surgical ward. Her family are at her bedside.
Ms Baker, who has three young sons under 11, was involved in a collision with a green Renault Megane Scenic car belonging to her partner at approximately 11.25pm. Yesterday, part of Beili Glas Road was sealed off and teaming with police officers who were carrying out an investigation into what happened.
Scenes of crime officers were at the scene gathering evidence. Collision examiners from the transport department's collision investigation unit were taking pictures of the road and looking for any markings on the road to piece together any information in an attempt to reconstruct how the accident occurred.
Detectives were making house-to-house inquiries. The Renault Megane was recovered by Caerleon firm Chris Spiteri & Son for the police and it will be subjected to a thorough examination.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, said she was at the accident scene when the ambulance crew were attending to Ms Baker.
She said: "I heard one of the ambulance crew say to a police officer, 'If we don't get her to hospital now, she won't make it through to the morning'. The community has been shocked by the incident and I really feel for her little boys."
Detective Inspector Peter Keen, from Blackwood CID, said: "A team of officers is currently investigating the matter and we are in the process of trying to establish how the lady sustained her injuries."
Police were last night questioning a 36-year old man at Newport Central police station. Police appealed for any witnesses to the accident to contact Blackwood CID on 01495 223673.
