PUPILS of fire-gutted Rogerstone Primary School will not return for lessons at their old site this September.
Instead, they will continue attending lessons at a former disused school - where one pupil was injured this month when a window broke.
Rogerstone Primary was destroyed by fire in April and pupils temporarily moved to the disused Westfield site at Malpas.
Parents were assured the reopened building was safe - but on June 5 one pupil was hit by falling glass.
Newport council confirmed a student was injured when a man on work experience opened a high window, previously sealed for some time.
A spokeswoman for Newport council said: "The safety of every pupil in Newport is a priority for the authority and is something we take extremely seriously.
"All usual safety checks were carried out at the Westfield site before pupils or Rogerstone Primary were moved there following the fire.
"The window in question passed all usual tests and was unlikely to present a risk to anyone so further checks were deemed unnecessary.
"We would like to reassure parents that extensive checks have been carried out on all other high-level windows in the school following the accident."
Parents and councillors wanted demountable classrooms installed at the Rogerstone site by the beginning of September.
But pupils will now be at the Malpas site for far longer than the anticipated three months. Chairman of governors Councillor Ernie Watkins said it looked "unlikely" that the school could return to the Rogerstone to stay in demountable classrooms by September.
But he added: "We think the best option for the children is to be educated in demountable classrooms on the Rogerstone site until the new school is completed.
"But the longer it goes on the less likely we are to achieve that in time for the next year. "The priority is to have the children at Rogerstone."
Parents were due to be updated on the plans at a meeting tonight at 7pm in the Griffin Building at Bassaleg School.
