YOUTHS armed with an airgun fired at a bus as it drove through a Newport housing estate yesterday.
The shots just missed the driver's window, and he told the Argus that if it had been broken or he had been hit the bus "could have gone out of control".
The incident took place shortly before 1pm yesterday.
The Newport Transport bus was driving along Lighthouse Road when six shots were fired by a group of youths from bushes opposite a new housing estate.
Bus driver Nick Lewis said: "I was just going down towards the estate and was by the new houses with about eight or ten passengers on board.
"I heard this bang from the side of the road and a nasty sort of thud that was a bit metallic, and a lady shouted 'We've just been shot at'.
"If they're taking pot shots at drivers of any kind it's dangerous. If they'd hit me I could have gone off the road and hit a house."
Police have not issued any description of the youths and are appealing to the public for information about the incident or anyone who may have been involved.
PC Paul Greenwood of Duffryn police said: "Nobody was injured this time but it looks as though the driver was targeted, which means we could have been dealing with much more unfortunate circumstances."
Anyone with information should call Duffryn police on 01633 817619 or Gwent HQ on 01633 838111.
