NEWPORT sprinter Christian Malcolm (pictured) has recovered from a knee injury and is set to compete in his first outdoor race of the season tomorrow.

Malcolm was due to open his outdoor season at Bedford last weekend, but a knee injury suffered two days before meant that the Welsh sprinter pulled out.

But the 200 metre sprint ace has fully recovered and is set to take part in the 100m at the Loughborough international.

And the world junior 200m gold medallist feels that after his warm weather training in Australia should stand him in good stead for the new season.

He said: "I've done things a bit differently this year. And although you won't be able to see the affects immediately I'll be more than prepared by the time the World championship trials are held next month.

And by the time the championships in Paris come around, I should be flying.

"It was slightly frustrating to suffer injury but it was better that I pulled out last Sunday at Bedford then risk further injury."

Malcolm is also likely to run in the 4x100m relay on Sunday where he will be representing Wales against sides from Scotland, Loughborough, BUSA as well as an international select team and a Great Britain Under-20 team.

The Newport sprinter will be joined in Loughborough by fellow Welsh stars Iwan Thomas and Jamie Baulch, from Risca. Thomas will be competing in the 400m while Baulch runs in the 200m slightly later in the day.

Both athletes are also expected to be part of the 4x400m squad that will also include Newport runner James Nasrat, who is also in the 800, and Lea Farmer.

Newport sprinters dominate the Welsh women's squad with Leanne Rowlands in the 100m, Rozelle Cavaciuti in the 200m and 400m runner Kath Sage.
