A ROAD closed after a young man died in an horrific crash was due to stay shut today as investigations continue into how the accident happened.
The man was named last night as Glyn Gurney, aged 20, believed to be from the Newport area.
Accident examiners stayed at the site on the A4042 at Newport until sunset last night, after a day of traffic mayhem in the city caused by the road closure.
More investigations are to be carried out today and more hold-ups are expected for motorists.
The wreckage of the car involved was still being examined at the site last night. The road was shut after the fatal crash happened just after 1.30am yesterday between the Croes-y-Mwyalch and Grove Park roundabouts.
A blue Volkswagen Golf collided with the central reservation on the southbound carriageway, heading into Newport.
Both the front seat passenger and driver had to be cut free from the wreckage and taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital.
The passenger, believed to be in his 20s and from Newport, died of his injuries. The driver, who has not been named, suffered a broken pelvis and is still recovering in hospital.
Gwent Police officers and vehicle accident examiners - some understood to have travelled from Hampshire - were at the scene yesterday trying to establish how the crash happened.
Inspector Peter Davies, from Gwent Police, said last night: "Our investigations into the accident are currently ongoing. We will be as thorough as we possibly can."
That, say police, may mean the road being closed for much of this morning.
Last night the police helicopter was out taking aerial photographs of the scene.
Massive jams queued back as far as Llanyrafon yesterday after police closed the road. Traffic was being diverted into the city via Malpas Road.
A spokesman from Traffic Wales said the crash caused problems on the roads yesterday, and major hold-ups in Malpas Road in the afternoon.
