WITH two new martial arts centres opening in Gwent karate and kickboxing have never been so popular.
The Maindee Martial centre, in Chepstow Road, is busier than ever and has expanded with a new club in Risca and another in Bettws due to open in June.
Owner Gary Gassor said: "We're really doing well and are getting more popular all the time. We get a lot of ladies in for the kickboxing and loads of kids in for our little dragons and little tigers classes.
We've had a lot of success in tournaments and we've got 86 signed up to go to Tenerife in July to train with Prince Nasseem's cousin."
The Black Belt Academy, run by karate expert Everton Smith, has also just opened a full-time centre above the Old Rising Sun pub, in Lynne Road, Newport.
The 4th Dan Wado Ryu Karate instructor has gained World and European titles and is now keen to pass on his skills and attitude to the next generation.
Mr Smith, 40, said: "The new full-time academy has really taken off with more than 80 members. The secret is in creating a fun and friendly environment where children and adults can practise the arts of karate and kickboxing. Not only that, but we hope to teach them the life skills they need to be a successful member of society.
"Communities these days are suffering from an increase in crime, drug use, social disorder and a lack of morals and beliefs, that's why we need to provide a character education programme. We need to give people positive messages about themselves and what they are capable of achieving."
"You could say that we are trying to build a better community and student at the same time. We focus on the mental benefits of karate as well as the physical.
"It is easy to see the improvement to your health, speed and power but the other benefits are just as powerful. We show students how to focus, improve discipline, manners, self-control, confidence and respect for themselves and others."
