A CWMBRAN man admitted peddling porn and pirating film and music CDs from his home.

David Chard, (pictured) aged 55, of Penylan Court, Coed Eva, Cwmbran, committed a total of 29 offences over a three-month period last year, Newport crown court heard.

Among the offences were four counts of Chard offering to supply unclassified, hardcore films between January 1 and March 15, last year.

The court was told 22 of the crimes were committed against the Trademarks Act and seven were under the Video Recordings Act.

Chard admitted all the charges when he appeared before the court yesterday. His wife, Helen, was also charged but denied all the allegations, and her pleas of not guilty were accepted by the Crown.

Others included three counts of supplying videos between February 4 and March 13, last year. The remaining offences were concerned with Chard having unauthorised use of material and unlawfully possessing it with intent to supply.

Some of the items included a copy of the Mull of Kintyre, by Paul McCartney and a CD by Mick Hucknall, of the group Simply Red, the court heard.

Chard was found to be in possession of sophisticated computer equipment designed for copying and distributing CDs.

The defendant's house was raided by police on March 12, last year, where 2,500 blank CDs were found, the court heard.

Prosecutor Leighton Hughes told Judge Roderick Denyer that Chard operated a "sophisticated business" under the mailing address, Karaoke Queen.

Stephen Whitehouse, head of trading standards at Torfaen council, said Chard had committed very serious crimes.

Speaking after the case he told the Argus: "When you work over the Internet you don't know who's placing an order because it's just a mailing address.

"Children could have got hold of some of the materials and these people aren't checking who they're sending the goods to. It could be anyone."

Mr Whitehouse fears this sort of crime is increasing. "We're seeing more of this. People working from home and thinking they can make a fast buck," he warned.

The case was adjourned for four weeks for pre-sentence reports.Chard was released on unconditional bail.
