THE walls of Caldicot Castle rang with the sound of cannon fire and clashing swords as the English Civil War Society re-enacted the turbulent events of 1645.
More than 1,200 people flocked to the castle to watch the Marquess of Winchester's Regiment of Foote go into battle on Sunday and Monday.
Rebel parliamentarians stormed the castle and its towers while royalists fought hard to keep their stronghold.
The atmosphere in the castle was enhanced by a living history camp and kitchen where visitors could find out more about everyday life during the civil war.
Sarah Finch, castle development officer, said: "About 400 people turned up yesterday, despite the rain, and we have doubled that today.
"The re-enactment group is really good at keeping the public interested in the battle, especially the kids who have all really loved the display so far."
