THE term 'visual theatre' is surely an oxymoron; isn't all theatre visual? But it's a term that has real meaning - some shows are simply more visual than others.

And three of the best-looking shows around are coming to Abergavenny's Borough Theatre over the next few weeks as part of their Eyes Wide visual theatre series.

Tomorrow the Actors of Dionysus present Agamemnon, the Greek masterpiece of possession and revenge by Aeschylus. It tells the story of a soldier who returns home after ten years in the Trojan War to be murdered by his own wife. Is she in control of her actions, or was she manipulated by the demons of revenge?

The show is fast-moving and entertainingly presented in the style which has earned the Actors a reputation as the UK's leading interpreter of Greek drama. On Wednesday masks, puppetry and music bring to life an extraordinary story of death and art.

In the final year of her life, Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon produced more than 700 intensely personal paintings, depicting her childhood, family secrets, love, loss and the sadness of exile.

Acclaimed company Horse and Bamboo bring that work to the stage in Company of Angels, a show described as "creative and inspired theatre" by Wallace and Gromit animator Nick Park.

And, two weeks later, on Wednesday, April 16, the much-praised animations of puppeteer Stephen Mottram comes to the theatre in Organillo.

He brings brilliant technical skill together with his gift for the form to create a show combining puppetry, automata and illusion which explores a mysterious underwater world which holds the very beginnings of life.

Each show costs £7.50 or £5 concessions, and starts at 7.30pm. Box office 01873 850805.
