NEWPORT reserve Matt Cambridge (pictured) has asked promoter Tim Stone to let him ride in the Mavericks' meeting at home to Wimbledon on Sunday.

The visit of the Dons to Hayley Stadium will form part of a double header, Wolverhampton the main attraction in the British League Cup.

Stone said: "Matt wants to get as much track time at Newport as quickly as possible."

The 21-year-old Rugby-based Cambridge said: "It's a case of getting as many laps as possible.

"Ideally, I would like to be a five-point Premier League rider by the end of the season and 10-point in the Conference.

"Chris (Schramm) and I picked up one point between us in the first meeting - I don't think that will happen again.

"The team spirit is superb - I have never known anything like it, getting support from top riders like Craig Watson and Frank Smart - it's brilliant."

Also riding for Mavericks will be Scott Pegler whose appearances last season were restricted because of work.

Meanwhile, the three-team M4 Trophy could finish with Newport, Swindon and Reading sitting on five points and the promoters scratching their heads in a bid to arrive at a winner.

But the permutations will be avoided if Reading win at Swindon in the final event tomorrow night.

Stone said: "We decided on the format - but not beyond that. It has proved a very good competition and I don't think anyone envisaged we would all end on five points.

"If that happens I would suggest a run-off at the end of the season to decide a winner."

And that would gain the backing of Reading promoter Pat Bliss who hopes to avoid the permutation game. She said: "If we win tomorrow at Swindon there will be no dispute who wins the trophy."

Elsewhere, Niels Kristian Iversen arrives back in Britain on Saturday after taking an engine back home to Denmark for fine tuning after a disappointing four-point performance against Swindon in the M4 Trophy on Sunday.

And he'll be hard at work preparing for a hectic period - Wolverhampton on Sunday followed by trips to Exeter on Monday and Trelawny on Tuesday.
