DEFENDER Rhys Weston, recovered from a back injury, is hoping he will get the call for Wales' Euro 2004 qualifier with Azerbaijan at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old Cardiff City right back said: "If the opportunity arises I will be delighted to play."

Weston won his fourth cap in the friendly with Bosnia and there were times when he looked distinctly unhappy.

Weston admitted: "I was at fault for the first goal against Bosnia. I know that I didn't set the world on fire and it could have gone better.

"Every young player dreams of playing for his country at the Millennium Stadium and I would love to experience the international scene again."

The former Arsenal full-back could well figure in manager Mark Hughes' squad with Mark Delaney and Matthew Jones ruled out through injury.

Wales sit proudly on top of group nine and Weston, whose father hails from Caerphilly, added: "We are confident we can beat anyone in this group and anything less than victory would be a disappointment."

Although Weston didn't figure in City's win over Mansfield last Friday evening to maintain their push for automatic promotion, the back injury has cleared.

He explained: "I feel fine after missing a few games through injury and suspension. The back is fine. There is a little discomfort while training but I would not have turned up if I had not been fit."

The players are not looking any further than Saturday's clash.

Weston said: "Azerbaijan are a force to be reckoned with. Technically they are a very good side. "It's going to be tough and we must be 100 per cent on top of our game.

And the young Bluebird added: "If we go through our group unbeaten then we qualify - it's as simply as that!"
