AS the first blossom appears on the trees and the lambs frolic in the fields it is time to get out and experience the glorious South Wales countryside in the spring.
Walking and rambling is the ideal way to see nature close up whilst getting some exercise and making new friends.
In Gwent all kinds of groups and programmes exist for people of all ages and levels of experience.
The Monmouthshire countryside service provides a programme of activities throughout the spring and summer for a wide range of groups.
Starting on March 31 they have a range of events that take advantage of their historical sites and beautiful surroundings.
Countryside officer Mark Langley said: "This year we've got family fun days that include treasure hunts and picnics at sites like Tintern and Caldicot castle. We also have longer walks for adults and walking for mums in the mornings. Many of our sites have disabled facilities and anybody from anywhere is welcome to come and join in."
People can get information from leaflets in libraries and other council facilities or call 01633 644850.
For the walker who wants to go a bit further the Pontypool Rambling association provides challenging treks all over the area.
The group was formed in 1967 after an ad was placed in Argus sister paper The Free Press. On their first trip 20 people responded and walked from Pontypool to Mamhilad and back. Since then the group has gone from strength to strength with scores of members aged from 7 to 67.
Only on one occasion was a ramble called off due to the weather, but the foot-and-mouth outbreak stopped the programme. As well as the rambling all year round there is a winter social programme with slide show and talks.
