Top of the priority list for Newport's speedway riders this season is the Premier League title.

Skipper Craig Watson, back in Britain for his seventh season, said: "We are working up for a better season than last.

"Winning the league title is top of our list. That's the aim of all the riders to make a challenge for the league title, because we are capable of it."

Newport are at Swindon tonight in the three-team M4 Trophy - a perfect warm-up tournament before the serious business begins.

"It means that we get a good few meetings under our belts before the league season starts," he added.

The 26-year-old Watson had a super summer back home, winning the Australian and New Zealand Grand Prix long-track championships.

And by means of relaxation he helped a friend set up in business in his home city of Sydney.

Watson, who will also be riding for Belle Vue in the Elite League - although he doesn't know his first date at the moment - has made a good start to the British season.

He scored 11 points in the Sunday opener with Reading and clocked 15 from six rides in the return on Monday night.

Watson, who has Elite League experience with Poole, added: "I suppose I'm reasonably happy with that but I set high standards and would have liked more.

"But we are all working for a better season than last and we're all hoping this could be a good year. We are capable of it.

"With the M4 Trophy it means that all the riders can get their machinery sorted out.

"It's different when you've been riding through the winter but most people purchase new equipment during the winter months so now's the time to sort out the little problems."

This will be Swindon's first outing of the season although Charlie Gjedde guested for Oxford in their 46-44 challenge defeat at Coventry on Saturday night.

Gjedde picked up seven points plus two bonus.

Swindon include former Newport rider Chris Neath and Paul Fry is back in action after injury.

Both are former Wasps' captains, Neath the youngest in the sport when he led the side.

Tim Stone, Newport promoter, said: "It's good to see Paul back on a bike after injury and Chris knows our track inside out.

"So it's going to be another hard meeting for the lads but we're in a good frame of mind despite losing our first meeting."

The return leg is at Hayley Stadium on Sunday.
