IF would-be politician Paul Taylor is elected to the National Assembly in May, he has just one aim - to say TA-TA to his job.

Because Mr Taylor, 51, is standing for the elections in the Islwyn constituency on a ticket of abolishing the National Assembly.

The Blackwood pub landlord, known to his mates as 'Tinker' Taylor, has formed a political party with that sole aim.

Mr Taylor, who owns the Cross Oak pub in Penmaen, has named the party TA-TA - Tinker Against The Assembly.

Labelling the Assembly as a "Rottweiler without teeth", Mr Taylor has vowed to topple it from within.

And he is confident he can mount a serious challenge to Plaid Cymru's AM Brian Hancock, who holds the seat.

Mr Taylor told the Argus: "We will promote by whatever democratic and legal means necessary the eventual dissolution of the National Assembly.

"I am fed up with the stream of hot air, spiralling costs and gross inefficiency."

He is also not impressed with modern-day politicians."I think they take themselves far too seriously.

"Our slogan is The Welsh Ashambly? No Thanks! Vote Tinker!

"A vote for me will be a vote to close the Assembly."

If he manages to win and take up the seat, Mr Taylor believes it will be the death knell for the Assembly.

He believes the clock should be turned back to the pre-devolution days of the Welsh Office as an alternative to the Assembly.

This is not Mr Taylor's first foray into politics, after recording 1,300 votes at the 2001 General Election, when he fought the Islwyn seat as an independent candidate.

But it is the first time he has stood on an abolitionist ticket.

Mr Taylor said: "I am confident that I can win and I think the other parties should disregard me at their peril.

"I get so many of my customers who tell me they are sick and tired of the Assembly."

The party's inaugural meeting took place in the pub on Sunday.

Mr Taylor said: "About 50 people turned up and I was happy with that.

The word is already being spread and I hope it will continue to spread like a virus throughout Islwyn."
