World record holder Colin Jackson brought down the curtain on his 18-year international career at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham but finished outside the medals.

The Welshman, making his 71st appearance in a British vest, finished fifth in 7.61 seconds in the 60 metres hurdles.

Jackson, 36, was the second man to rise from his blocks behind Shaun Bownes, the Commonwealth 110m hurdles champion.

But in a stacked field, a tiring Jackson was overtaken in the rush for the finishing line. Allen Johnson, the World 110m outdoor champion, won in 7.47secs ahead of Sydney Olympic gold medallist Anier Garcia, who clocked 7.49secs.

In third place behind the American and Cuban came Liu Xiang, world junior record holder, in 7.52secs.

Another personal best lifted Frenchman Ladji Doucoure to fourth ahead of Jackson in 7.58secs.

Jackson said: "It's been a wonderful, wonderful, 20-odd years.

"Sorry I couldn't perform a little bit better, but my legs are really tired."

Meanwhile, Jonathan Edwards crashed out of the medals after a nightmare last round in the triple jump when brilliant clearances from Walter Davis and Yoelbi Quesada pushed the Olympic champion into fourth place.

Edwards was lying second going into the final round, 12 centimetres behind European champion Christian Olsson, the leader with a fifth round jump of 17.31m.

But American Walt Davis cleared 17.35m, the biggest jump of his career, to leap to the top of the leaderboard, then Olsson responded with 17.70m - the best in the world this year.

Former world outdoor champion Quesada moved third, clearing a season's best of 17.27m - and the pressure was on Edwards.

Despite a speedy run-up, the Briton managed only 17.70m, leaving the arena empty handed.
